Yoga for Life

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga emerged from Tantric practices that originated in ancient India and date back to pre-Vedic and Vedic traditions and elements organized systematically between the 9th and 15th centuries CE. Influenced by Nath yogis, especially Guru Matsyendranath and his disciple Gorakshanath, Hatha Yoga is a preparatory practice focusing on purification, making the mind and body achieve a higher awakening of consciousness through meditation and spiritual awakening. In the 15th century, the foundational text drew from earlier scriptures like the Gheranda Samhita and Shiva Samhita, compiled into Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Yogi Swami Swatmarama. It connects the teaching's lineage to the Matsyendranath of the Nath yogis, emphasizing the physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and energy regulation (mudras and bandhas).

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga, meaning the "Eight-Limbed Path," originates from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (circa 200 BCE - 400 CE) and serves as a structured guide for spiritual growth, ethical living, and self-discipline. It consists of eight limbs: Yama (ethical and moral principles), Niyama (personal disciplines and self-regulations), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (spiritual absorption). Ashtanga Yoga remains a traditional and philosophical foundation for various yoga styles as a guidance to practitioners. Later, in the 20th century, yoga masters like T. Krishnamacharya and K. Pattabhi Jois revived Ashtanga principles by influencing modern yoga practices and adapting them into asana variations by introducing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda Yoga was founded by Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887–1963), a renowned Indian spiritual teacher and former medical physician who integrated traditional Hatha Yoga with a holistic perspective on health and well-being. His teachings emphasized physical health, breath control, diet, relaxation, positive thinking, and meditation, forming the foundation of the Five Points of Yoga (Asana, Pranayama, Savasana, Vegetarian Diets, and Vedanta with Dhyana). In 1957, his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda (1927–1993) spread his teachings globally by establishing the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, making this system accessible worldwide. Rooted in classical yoga and Vedanta philosophy, Sivananda Yoga promotes self-discipline, selfless service, devotion, and spiritual enlightenment, ensuring its continued relevance in modern times.
